What is the U17 World Challenge?
The U17 World Challenge is the first step in Hockey Canada’s prestigious Program of Excellence, bringing together many of the top 16-year-old hockey players from around the world. The tournament has become one of hockey’s premier development events, giving fans an early glimpse of the future stars of the NHL, World Juniors and Olympic hockey.
This year’s tournament features six elite teams from around the world, showcasing incredible speed, skill and competition. Every game offers the chance to watch tomorrow’s superstars compete on today’s stage.
See Tomorrow’s NHL Stars Today
One of the most exciting things about the U17 World Challenge is that you’re not just watching elite international hockey, you could be watching the NHL’s next generation before they become famous.
Past participants include some of the biggest names in hockey, including:
- Auston Matthews – Selected first overall in the 2016 NHL Draft, he is widely regarded as one of the most prolific goalscorers in modern hockey history.
- Connor McDavid – Three-time Hart Trophy winner and one of the greatest players of his generation.
- Nathan MacKinnon – Stanley Cup Champion, Hart Trophy winner and perennial NHL scoring leader.
- Alexander Ovechkin – An unstoppable force of nature on the ice, he has electrified the hockey world for over two decades with his one-of-a-kind dynamic shot from the left circle that has redefined modern goal-scoring.
- John Tavares – First overall draft pick by the New York Islanders in 2009, Olympic Gold medal winner in 2014.
- Patrick Kane – The highest-scoring American-born player in NHL history, he cements his legacy as an all-time great by bringing his signature “Showtime” flair, elite vision, and three Stanley Cups back home to the Chicago Blackhawks.
- Macklin Celebrini – First overall NHL Draft pick in 2024 and one of hockey’s brightest young stars.
Many players who compete in the U17 World Challenge go on to represent their countries at the IIHF World Junior Championship before hearing their names called at the NHL Draft. Watching them compete in Oakville means you’ll have the chance to say, “I saw them before they made it to the NHL.”
